There's any number of ways that people find their way into a career. For Joseph Aranbayev, the revelation came in a barber's chair.

“I had been getting my hair cut at the same place in New Hyde Park for years, and one day I just asked them if they would teach me to cut hair,” he said.

They agreed, and 15 years later Aranbayev is still cutting hair. Earlier this year, the Forest Hills native opened his first shop, Whitestone Barbers.

The shop offers a free hot towel and massage with every haircut, and men in uniform get $5 off. They also cut kid's hair.

Aranbayev said it's good to finally be in business for himself.

“It's been 15 years, so I figured it was time,” Aranbayev said. “An opportunity came my way and I decided to take it.”

Whitestone Barbers is located at 150-43A 14th Avenue in Whitestone. It is open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m, Saturday from 9 a.m. to 6:30 p.m., and Sunday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. For more information, call (718) 423-2889.
