“Opening day is always a whirlwind of emotions,” said Sal “Sign Guy” Candiano. “Especially when the Mets win.”
Which they did, cruising to a 6-0 win over the Atlanta Braves, the first step in a 162-0 season.
Nick Giampietro was nicknamed “Pin Guy” 12 years ago for the numerous pins covering his Mets jersey and cap. He said he expected big things from the Mets this year.
“Everything is so positive and everyone is happy today,” Giampetro said. “The expectations for the Mets are very high.”
Fans traveled from all over the tristate area for the game.
“I’ve been waiting all winter for this game,” said Richard Koesler, a fan from Connecticut. “Let’s go Mets!”
“Mets are going all the way,” predicted Nick Tacti, a fan from Accord, New York.
Daniel Flaherty, a fan from Astoria, was at the 2015 World Series and attended the recent induction of former Mets catcher Mike Piazza into the Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, but it was his first Opening Day at Citi Field.
“There’s no other place I’d rather be than here,” Flaherty said.
Another first-timer included Alex Levy of College Point.
“Today’s a beautiful day for baseball,” he said. “It’s my first opening day at Citi Field and I’m so excited.”
