BAMAKO (Reuters) - United Nations peacekeepers in the town of Gao in northern Mali fired tear gas on Tuesday to prevent crowds from storming a U.N. base, a witness and a U.N. spokesman said. The witness said he saw U.N. troops fire tear gas as several thousand people protested outside the base. He said at least one person had been killed, apparently by gunfire. Olivier Salgado, spokesman for the U.N. mission, could not confirm the use of live rounds. He said peacekeepers had fired tear gas after a crowd of about 1,000 people started throwing rocks and tried to force their way into the base.

Police in France and Belgium arrested eight suspected militant Islamists on Tuesday in dawn raids three weeks after jihadists killed 17 people in Paris. "A particularly dangerous and organized network was broken up today," said French Interior Minister Bernard Cazeneuve, whose government has deployed thousands of soldiers and extra police since the Jan. 7-9 attacks on satirical newspaper Charlie Hebdo and a Jewish supermarket. Elite police troops, many of them hooded and heavily armed, arrested five people aged 26 to 44 in the raid in Lunel, a small town near France's Mediterranean coast. In Belgium, where earlier this month police killed two gunmen in one of several raids, three men were arrested in Kortrijk, a town some 10 km (6 miles) from the French border, prosecutors said.

An New York Police Department officer takes photographs while keeping security during a snowstorm in Times Square, New YorkHigh winds and heavy snow were set to persist throughout the day, with another foot forecast to fall in parts of Boston. Wind-driven seas caused flooding along some low-lying roadways in coastal Massachusetts, state police said. The heaviest snowfall was recorded in parts of Connecticut and Massachusetts, while New York City's Central Park saw just 6 inches (15 cm), less than a quarter of the "historic" snowfall that some meteorologists had predicted. "When you hear the word 'crippling' and you look out your window this morning, it is not there," said John Davitt, a meteorologist on New York's NY1 news channel.
