Mike Mussina out, Derek Lowe In?

So Mike Mussina officially retired today. It was a move we all saw coming, especially after Mussina finally became a 20-game winner this past season.
Still, Mussina’ s loss leaves a huge hole in the Yankee rotation and clubhouse. Sure, Mike tended to get a little moody when the defense behind him came up short, but he always came ready to play, and was gutsy and smart till the very end.

So who do the Yankees fill the hole with? They’ve already made their pitch to C.C. Sabathia, and are looking intently at AJ Burnett and Derek Lowe.
Personally, I’m not quite sold on Lowe. He’s a gamer, that’s for sure, but he is 35 years old. Also, he won 14 games, last year, but if you look at his stats over the past four years, you’ll notice that his ERA crept up slightly each year before going down last year.

Also, look at his win totals. 2005: 12-15, 2006: 16-8, 2007: 12-14, 2008: 14-11. I can’t chalk it up to the Dodger’s teams of recent being crappy, as they did finish with winning records three straight years, so maybe he’s on the verge of a decline.

Then again, Rogers Clemens was once said to be in the twilight of his career.
