From now until August 31, visitors to Sky View Center on College Point Boulevard in Flushing can view a Pop Art installation featuring the work of internationally acclaimed artist dEmo. The collection features 30 brightly colored bear sculptures ranging in size from two to six feet.
The sculptures have traveled the world before coming to their current stop in Queens. The Bears have visited sites in France, Mexico, and Italy, including an exhibit at the 2010 Venice Biennale. This is the third time the sculptures have been exhibited in the United States.
“This project has been one of my favorite to take around the world,” said dEmo, whose real name is Eladio de Mora, in a statement. “Whether you’re a young child or an adult, you can appreciate the vibrancy of the Bears and their different sizes.”
Sky View Center worked with the Spanish artist and Flushing contemporary art gallery Crossing Art to bring the Bears to Queens.
This is the first time that Sky View Center has ever featured artwork.
“We done a great with décor and holiday celebrations, but this is the first time we’ve ever brought artwork to Sky View Center,” said Ed Hilla, general manager of Sky View Center.
Hilla said Sky View was excited to have the Bears for the summer.
“We thought the Bears would be a fun and wonderful thing for the summer,” said Ed Hilla, general manager of Sky View Center. “If you could see the smiles on kid’s faces as they walk through the doors and run to these bears.”
The Bears are situated throughout Sky View, and the center plans to run contests on Facebook and Twitter (@SkyViewCenter) throughout the summer, such as challenging shoppers to find certain Bears, to win prizes and other gifts.
